The comfort of the saints have in sacred ordinances, is not so much about Bethel, the house of God, from El-bethel, the God of the house. There are two things that are promised; that he is to be the father of a great nation, and that he is to be the owner of a good land. These two promises had a spiritual significance, which Jacob had some notion of, although not as clear and distinct as we now have. Cristo is the promised seed, and heaven is the promised land; the former is the foundation, and the latter the chief cornerstone, of all the favors of God.
